Be Prepared for Disasters

According to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission’s 2010 report, Asia Pacific accounts for 89% of the world’s total victims of disasters.

A testament to the report’s finding is the recent earthquake and tsunami disaster in Fukushima that cost Japan a staggering US$300 billion in damages and tens of thousands of lives perished.

Another was the flooding (January 2011) in Queensland, Australia, which ripped towns apart and affected over 200,000 people. The city airport, rail and all major roads were closed, and the severe collapse of businesses, especially the crops and coal industry, have caused the state an estimated whopping sum of AUS$5 billion in damages. The state government projects a minimum of two years before infrastructure, houses and businesses can be fully restored. . . .
